ScanTally

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 21 September 2026

ScanTally scans your documents and receipts, reads what is on them, and adds up what you have spent. It does all of that on your phone. There are no accounts, there is nothing to sign in to, and the app does not send your documents, your figures, or anything else to us or to anyone else.

This is the whole policy, written plainly.

The short version

The camera

ScanTally uses the camera to capture the page in front of you. Finding the edges of the page, straightening it, cleaning it up and reading the words all happen on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere to be processed. You are asked for camera access the first time you scan, and you can withdraw it at any time in your phone's settings — the rest of the app still works.

Images and files you choose

Reading what is on the page

Recognising the text, pulling out a merchant, a date, a total and tax, and finding a table are all done by software running on your phone, using the text recognition your phone already provides. No image and no text is sent to us or to any other service for processing.

Where your scans live

Your scans are kept in a ScanTally folder in your phone's own files, which you can open, copy out and back up yourself. Nothing is locked in. Working files the app needs are kept in a hidden folder alongside them.

Finding your scans from outside the app

So that you can find a scan without opening the app, ScanTally can add your scans' names and the words on them to your phone's own search index. That index belongs to your phone, stays on it, and is never sent anywhere. If you would rather it did not, there is a switch in ScanTally's settings to turn it off, which also removes what was already added.

When you share or export something

When you send a scan, a spreadsheet or an export somewhere — by mail, to your files, to another app — you choose where it goes, using your phone's own sharing. From the moment it arrives there, it is covered by whatever that app or service does with it, not by this policy. ScanTally itself sends nothing anywhere.

Converting files stays offline too

ScanTally can turn a document you already have into a PDF. To lay the document out, it uses the same machinery your phone uses to preview such files — but with the internet shut off. If the document you convert refers to something online, such as a web page saved to your phone that links to a picture hosted elsewhere, that item is not fetched: it is simply left out of the PDF. A saved web page's own scripts are not run either, and nothing is kept from one conversion to the next.

What we do not do

Keeping and deleting your data

Because everything is on your phone, you are the one in control. Delete a scan or a sheet inside the app to remove it and its file. Delete the app to remove everything at once. There is nothing held anywhere else for us to delete, and nothing for you to ask us to delete.

Children

ScanTally is a general-purpose scanning and expenses tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children — and in fact we do not collect personal information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If ScanTally ever handles data differently — for instance if a future optional feature needed to send something on your behalf — we will update this page and describe it clearly here before that feature is switched on.
